PostSubject: The Nicene Creed   Fri Jan 11, 2013 1:05 pm

I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,

and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The most profound part of this to me is the very first sentence..."I believe in One God..." Only recently have I ever spent any time and study trying to truly understand what it means to profess Faith in "One God".

Consider the Trinity...the Triune God. One God in Three Persons...three distinct Persons with one Nature. God the Father, who is spirit...and thus so immense for our finite minds to comprehend, immediately begetting the Son...who is everything that the Father is in Nature...God's very understanding of His Being...His Word as we call Him, and the Holy Spirit...also fully the same very Nature as Father and Son...proceeding immediately from Father and Son.

What makes it such a labor of love for me to comprehend Him is that I still try to relate things to what I know, namely "time" and "space". But time and space are only a necessity for material beings, so God has no need for them, being spirit. I can only wonder at what great humility He desired to show us by becoming human...taking on ourmaterial form and existing within the limits of time for our salvation.

I assent to this profession completely and without any reservation.

I believe it is one of the most concise and comprehensive profession of authentic Christian beliefs.

I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.

This professes the Christian belief of monotheism as well as beginning to build to the doctrine of the Trinity

Well said Dave! The Creed takes its time building the profession of the Trinity, but what an amazing doctrine. Sooo far beyond our human rationality, but certainly makes us cry out the battle cry of the archangel Michael and say "Who is like God?!"
God's peace,
Blackie
